Declutter January: Making Space for a Cozy, Reading-Filled Year

January is the perfect time to clear space and reset in a way that feels calm and manageable. Our January Declutter Challenge is designed to help you slowly remove what no longer serves you, creating a lighter home and a clearer mind.

With simple daily prompts spread across four gentle weeks, this challenge focuses on progress over perfection. Even small decluttering sessions can make daily routines feel easier and leave more room for what you love, including time to read and enjoy quiet moments.

We’ve also created a printable PDF version of the challenge to make it easy to follow along, whether you prefer a full overview or a simple checklist.

How the Declutter January Challenge Works

Each week focuses on a different type of space, starting with everyday areas and gradually moving into more personal and mental clutter. You can follow along day by day, skip ahead, or use the catch-up days whenever you need them.

This is meant to be flexible, gentle, and realistic progress over perfection, always.

Decluttering Tips & Gentle Rules

Week 1: Everyday Essentials (Days 1–7)

Focus on high-traffic areas like the entryway, kitchen counters, and living room surfaces. These small resets can make the biggest difference in how your home feels day to day.

Week 2: Daily Life Clutter (Days 8–14)

This week looks at the things we use constantly but rarely sort through wallets, phones, paper piles, bathrooms, and linens. A little attention here can bring a surprising sense of calm.

Week 3: Personal Spaces (Days 15–21)

Closets, nightstands, books, and bedroom storage take center stage. These are the spaces we return to at the beginning and end of each day, so even small changes can feel deeply comforting.

Week 4: Hidden + Mental Clutter (Days 22–28)

This week focuses on the less visible clutter – craft supplies, office areas, digital files, and those “maybe” items we tend to avoid deciding on.

Final Days: Reflect + Reset (Days 29–31)

The last few days are about finishing up, reflecting, and enjoying the space you’ve created. Think of it as a gentle closing chapter rather than a big finale.

Whether you complete every day or just a handful, we hope this challenge helps your home feel a little lighter and your days a little calmer. One small space at a time is more than enough.

Our favorite part of decluttering is what comes after cozy corners, quiet moments, and more time to read.
